Clayton Welhouse

Clayton William Welhouse “Kay” - Little Chute - Age 96, passed away peacefully on Feb. 10, 2022. He was born March 6, 1925 to John G. (William George) “Bill” and Edna (Bedwell) Welhouse in Little Chute. During the summer of 1942 he met Violet “Red” Wiedenhaupt. He was inducted into the service and was sent to Camp Bowie, Texas, with the 248th Engineer Company B for training, then shipped to England from which point he was deployed into Germany. While he didn’t share much about his deployment, he spoke often of all the civilians who suffered and those who perished. During his deployment he received a Certificate of Merit for disregarding his own safety while dragging two others to safety during battle near Sarre-Union, France. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned home where he obtained a job at Kimberly Paper Mill and married Red that May 4. He enjoyed fishing whenever he could, and loved to spend time doing yard work and handyman chores around the house. He especially loved his life on the Fox River watching the animals. He always said that his life there was a little like living in Tom Sawyer’s world. He is survived by his three children: Mary Kay (Kevin Knopp) Welhouse, Waupaca; Karen Drwila, Little Chute; Nancy Beyer, (Rick Wolff), Menasha; grandchildren: Erik Welhouse, Steven (Donna) Schelfhout and Jessika Schelfhout; great-grandchildren: Alex, Jenalle, Christopher, Casey, Devon, and Taylor; great-great-grandson, Quinton. Clayton was preceded in death by his wife: “Red.” Visitation was held Feb. 19 at the Verkuilen-Van Deurzen Family Funeral Home, Little Chute, with full military honors by the American Legion Post #258. A memorial is being established in Clayton’s name to benefit WWII Veterans.
