Sister Mary Lee Schommer

Sister Mary Lee Schommer - Age 79, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022, at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc. She was born May 16, 1942, in Appleton, the daughter of the late Raymond and Rosalia (Rose) (Wydeven) Schommer. The former Mary Ann Schommer entered the convent in 1956 and professed her vows in 1961. Sister Mary Lee earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Silver Lake College, Manitowoc; a Master’s in Education from the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio; and a Masters in Social Work from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. Sister Mary Lee ministered as a teacher at St. Boniface and Holy Innocents, both in Manitowoc; St. Mary, Brillion; and St. Francis, Hollandtown, all in Wisconsin. She was principal at St. Paul, Wrightstown; St. Thomas More, Appleton; St. Joseph, Green Bay and St. Peter the Fisherman, Two Rivers; and St. Agnes, Mingo Junction, Ohio. After earning her degree in social work, Sister Mary Lee was a counselor at Rhinelander Catholic Central, Rhinelander and Manitowoc Area Catholic System, Manitowoc. She also provided various community services while living at Holy Family Convent: helper in the Business Office, Director of Education, Directress of Postulants and Temporary Professed. Since 2012 she had been a resident of St. Rita Health Center, Manitowoc. Survivors include: Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, brother: Daniel Schommer, sister-in-law: Karen Schommer, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Raymond and Rosalia (Wydeven) Schommer, brothers: Ray Schommer and Rev. Msgr. Mark Schommer, and sister-in-law: Lois Schommer. Funeral services were at the Holy Family Convent Chapel. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial was the Rev. Placid Stroik, O.F.M. Sister Mary Lee was laid to rest at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.
