On Tuesday, Aug. 18, the Kimberly Area School District Board of Education convened for a special meeting to decide on the future of fall sports in the district.

In sports terms, the action taken by the Kaukauna Area School District’s Board of Education last week was somewhat of an “upset.”

For those teams still participating in the “normal” fall sports season in 2020, the first official competitions of the year got underway this past week as girls’ golf teams around the area took to their local courses.

My honest answer? I’m really not sure. Sometimes it feels like they do, sometimes it feels like they don’t. Sometimes it feels like we need athletes — some of whom have very powerful voices, whether you like to admit it or not — to speak up on issues in our society, because they have the ability to affect change where and when it’s needed.

Kimberly football fans may be forced to wait for the season to start, but for two 2021 Papermaker grads, the future is already beginning.

On Aug. 16, first-team all-FVA cornerback Griffin Wiegel committed to Winona State (Minn.).

Then rising tight end Brett Perronne made the same exact commitment just a day later.

The North Eastern Conference last week decided to move ahead with the fall sports season.

The Kimberly Area School District Board of Education Tuesday made the decision to move “high-risk” fall sports — football, boys and girls volleyball and boys soccer — to the alternate spring season that the WIAA outlined earlier this month.
