Cooper Effa and Trevor Verhagen helped the Little Chute Mustangs boys basketball team grit out their first win of the season on the road against New London. Both players led the way with 13 points in the win, while Jacob Verhagen also had eight points in the 49-46 win.
Ramses Trader and James Thao had the top finishes for the Kimberly wrestling team at the Papermaker invite last week. Trader took first in the 132 lbs. weight class on the girls side, while Thao took third in the same weight class on the boys side.
Brandon Brady and Aydian Stingle both took home a first place finish last week at the annual Nick Mueller memorial tournament in Little Chute as the Mustangs took fourth with 121 points in the invite.
The Little Chute girls basketball team played a close first half with Green Bay East before the Red Devils used an early second half run to pull away. Green Bay East used an 8-0 run to gain the advantage as they handed the Mustangs a 40-25 loss at home.
There will be changes with wrestling in the WIAA this season. Point totals have changed this season and each state qualifying wrestler will be guaranteed two matches in Madison starting this year.
The Little Chute Mustangs are taking that match-by-match approach this season. The squad returns key returners like Jordan Pynenberg, Noah Van Lankveldt, Brandon Brady and Owen Peeters, but are looking for some guys to step up this winter.
In his second season as Kimberly head wrestling coach, Jordan Weinzetl expects his team to take it one match at a time. Despite losing Tanner Hart and Brody Beck to graduation, the Papermakers do bring back two wrestlers that had 20 wins last year in James Thao and Daniel Grey.
Led by state qualifier Liam Crook, the Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts wrestling team looks for their experience to lead them on another path toward Madison.
“We have a big roster with a lot of guys back, so expectations are really high,” head coach Jeff Matczak said.
